Apartment information system

Wei Luo, Northern Illinois University

Summary

The purpose of this project is to familiarize the student with the entire process of creating a GIS project from data capture through analysis and generating the final map result using GeoMedia Pro.

Context

Type and level of course
Entry level GIS course, required for GIS certificate

Geoscience background assumed in this assignment
none

GIS/remote sensing skills/background assumed in this assignment
Basic understanding of projection, spatial and attribute information and linkage between the two. This lab is synthesize all the skills they have learned in previous labs (such as registration, map projection, digitizing, creating maps, query, etc) into one complete project.

Software required for this assignment/activity:
GeoMedia Professional 6.1

Time required for students to complete the assignment:
2 weeks

Goals

GIS/remote sensing techniques students learn in this assignment
To be familiar with the entire process of creating a GIS project from start to finish.

Other content/concepts goals for this activity
Spatial query (new); reinforce previously learned concepts: registration, map projection, digitizing, creating maps, query, etc.

Higher order thinking skills goals for this activity

Description of the activity/assignment

After talking about the concepts such as data models, map projection, etc, students need to apply them to understand them better. This project asks students to build a GIS project from scratch. It requires digitizing, joining attributes, and simple spatial queries to generate maps using a simple and familiar apartment information system for the problem context.

Determining whether students have met the goals

They are able to construct a spatial query themselves.
