Vignettes are stand-alone, illustrated electronic case studies that teach about geomorphology, surface processes, and/or Quaternary history. Vignettes can be used alone or in combination with the "Key Concepts in Geomorphology", the first in a new generation of textbooks. Vignettes allow faculty to customize the learning resources they offer students to enrich and personalize student learning experiences.

Marine Geomorphology: Geomorphic Processes, Hazards, and Paradoxes in Monterey Canyon
Douglas Smith, California State University-Monterey Bay
Introduction While traditional geomorphic studies focus on the geologic processes and products that shape our terrestrial topography, there are equally exciting opportunities to explore the other 71% of the planet ...

The Snowplow, Lake Bonneville, Utah
charles oviatt, Kansas State University
Lake Bonneville was the largest of the late Pleistocene lakes in the Great Basin of western North America (Fig. 1). It occupied the basin of modern Great Salt Lake and was hydrographically closed during its ...

Arroyo Cutting in the Southwestern U.S.
Jonathan Harvey
Introduction In the semiarid southwestern United States, water is extremely important. However, most streams in the region are ephemeral, meaning that they are dry for much of the year and flow only during flash ...

Eolian Landforms and Deposits of the Eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho
William Phillips, University of Idaho
The Eastern Snake River Plain (ESRP) is a northeast-trending, 300 kilometer-long depression underlain by Cenozoic volcanic rocks (Fig. 1). Well-known for many examples of volcanic landforms including basalt lava ...

Tunnel Channels of the Saginaw Lobe, Michigan, USA
Alan Kehew, Western Michigan University
Introduction Drainage of meltwater from a glacier occurs at the surface of the glacier, as well as internally and between the ice and its bed. Different components of the meltwater drainage system commonly ...

Catastrophic glacial-lake outburst spillways: form and process relationships.
Alan Kehew, Western Michigan University
Proglacial Lake outbursts along the southern margins of the Laurentide Ice Sheet As the Laurentide Ice Sheet retreated northward through the Great Plains and midwest area of North America, meltwater drainage ...

Billabongs (waterholes), unique geomorphology and hydrology in action in arid Australia
Joshua Larsen
Much on the centre of Australia is an arid or semi-arid landscape, and the low average annual rainfalls make it difficult for the rivers to run and the lakes to fill. Some of the rivers that drain the centre of the ...

Reconstructing the geomorphic history of a cave: a case study from Liang Bua, Indonesia
Kira Westaway
Liang Bua, a large cave situated 16 km from Ruteng in western Flores, Indonesia (Figure 1), was formed as a subterranean chamber over 600 ka. From this time to the present, a series of geomorphic events influenced ...

Human Impacts on the Landscape
Roger Hooke
Humans move tremendous amounts of earth every year. They are arguably the premier geomorphic agent sculpting the surface of Earth today. In the early 1990s, people in the United States were moving about 0.8 Gt (Gt ...

Understanding soil erosion and landscape evolution using computer based predictive models
Greg Hancock
The ability to measure and model soil erosion and resultant landscape evolution is important because soil erosion has a range of environmental impacts, including loss of organic matter and nutrients, reduction of ...
