2025 Educator Workshop:
Teaching Computation with MATLAB (and GenAI)

October 26-28, 2025
Carleton College, Northfield, MN

For Educators in Geoscience, Math, Engineering, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and more

Now in its 11th year, the Teaching Computation with MATLAB workshop brings together educators to learn about trends in teaching, share experiences, and develop curriculum that improves student learning, with each educator focusing on their particular course goals and desired outcomes. The workshops introduce participants to the newest trends in STEM teaching -- from flipped classrooms, to computational notebooks to online grading. The 2025 workshop includes a focus on Generative AI (aka GenAI or ChatGPT). MathWorks staff and educator peers will be on hand to help turn the learnings into practical classroom approaches that draw on relevant MATLAB tools and features.

The workshop will take place in-person at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.
The application deadline is June 15th 2025.

The workshop program combines training sessions introducing teaching tools, brief talks by educator peers, and group breakouts that account for approximately half the workshop, including dedicated work-time to develop and evolve course curriculum. Conveners develop the workshop program and working group make-up based on applicant interests and teaching focuses.

Workshop Goals

At the workshop, educators will:

  • Explore methodologies for teaching computation effectively, in engineering- and science-focused courses, as well as dedicated programming courses.
  • Create, share and publish teaching activities (aka course modules).
  • Learn MATLAB teaching tools: incorporating new tools - such as MATLAB Live Scripts, MATLAB Online, MATLAB GPT, and MATLAB Onramp -- to improve student learning and course effectiveness.
  • Join a community of educators teaching computation and publishing shareable, reusable curriculum.

This workshop is a collaboration between MathWorks and the Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College.

Dates and Times: October 26-28, 2025

The workshop will start at 5:00pm on Sunday, October 26th, 2025, although we expect to offer optional 1-on-1 mentoring sessions on Sunday from 2-4PM.Participants should plan to arrive in Northfield by 12:00pm on Sunday. The workshop will end on Tuesday, October 28th at 2:00 pm. Participants should plan return travel from MSP airport no earlier than 4:30 pm that day.

Participant Contributions

Acceptance to the workshop means agreement to

  • Submit a written teaching activity involving teaching computation using MATLAB. The Editor Review Team reviews activities submitted by workshop participants and shares feedback prior to the workshop. (Submission Template, MATLAB Teaching Activity collection)
  • Participate fully in the workshop and attend all workshop sessions. Multiple participants are invited to deliver presentations on their teaching experiences and/or serve as a working group leader at the workshop.
  • Review and follow the Code of Professional Conduct for SERC Events.

Applying to the Workshop

Applicants for this workshop are required to teach at a college or university and have experience teaching (or plans to teach) with MATLAB. In addition to applying to the workshop, applicants may also apply for a stipend using the separate stipend application form.
