Dear MATLAB SERC Community –
Many of you have attended the MATLAB SERC teaching computation workshop in past years.
I’m reaching out to encourage you to consider attending this year and to tell you about some changes at this year’s workshop that will make it even better. The changes:
1) There’s an increasing number of disciplines and better representation each year. This year has lots of applicants in Mathematics and Engineering, in addition to the usual Geoscience, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry educators.
2) Second, we’re seeing an increase in pairs and groups from a single school. It appears that Teaching Computation is catching on cross departmentally and across schools; it’s not just for 1 course anymore.
3) Finally – There’s an added bonus this year: Teaching Activity Peer Review.
What's a Peer Review? Historically, we’ve had attendees contribute prework. They upload their teaching activities to the site for use during the workshop and for posterity. Lots of sharing, learning, and improving. https://serc.carleton.edu/teaching_computation/materials/activities.html
This year, we’ll be hosting a Teaching Activities Peer Review session prior to the workshop.
This means that any activities that are already submitted will be peer reviewed. This is a result of multiple requests from previous attendees to create a mechanism that will enable them to get credit from their institutions for all their teaching output.
This also means that new teaching activities that you contribute prior to the review will get reviewed as part of it.
More on all this later.
In the meantime –
1) Consider attending the workshop. Apply here: https://serc.carleton.edu/teaching_computation/workshop_2018/index.html
2) Submit new teaching activities to the activities collection ( by mid-August, to get it reviewed)
https://serc.carleton.edu/teaching_computation/materials/share_activity.html
3) Invite colleagues to apply (and submit teaching activities): https://serc.carleton.edu/teaching_computation/workshop_2018/index.html
Feel free to forward the invitation that's attached.
Looking forward to seeing some of you again.
Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions.
