Why adopt SCALE-UP?
Initial Publication Date: November 14, 2008
The SCALE-UP approach to teaching and learning has students working in cooperative groups in an active setting and is especially suited for large enrollment classes. It is a viable alternative to classes taught using a traditional lecture with separate breakout laboratory sections. Because the entire class is taught in the same room with the same students and instructors each class, all activities, including laboratory experiments, can be arranged to build on one another in sequence for greater learning impact than when some activities are taught in small sections running parallel to the lecture course. Initially developed for Physics, SCALE-UP has been adapted for a variety of disciplines. These research-proven pedagogies not only help prepare students to be leaders through the development of team-building skills, they also increase learning of course content.
