Participant Checklist

In order to help you get the most out of the workshop for Teaching Computation in the Sciences Using MATLAB, we ask that you do several things in advance. Here is a list of the preparatory activities and their deadlines.

By September 30th, 2016:

  • Register for the workshop. Note that all accepted applicants need to register, and the registration form is not the same form as the application form that you have already filled out.
  • Please make your travel plans and complete the travel information form so that you can attend the opening workshop session at 5 pm on Sunday, October 23, 2016, with a reception and keynote presentation. The workshop will not conclude until 2 pm on October 25, and it is essential that you attend the full workshop, including the full day on Tuesday. For information on travel, lodging, ground transportation, and meals, see the information below.
    • Remember that participants must provide their own transportation to and from the workshop.
    • The workshop will be held at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, approximately 40 miles (50 minutes) south of the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport.
    • As the workshop approaches, we will provide you with a list of participant arrival times so that you can arrange to share ground transportation if you fly into the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport
  • Submit one activity and one essay (see directions below). These submissions will be used to select workshop panelists, they will be posted on the workshop website, and they will be featured in a new web-based collection devoted to teaching computation using MATLAB in the sciences.
    • Submit at least one assignment or activity for a science course that teaches computational skills using MATLAB. Submissions are done via an online form that contains text fields for narrative descriptions and avenues for uploading files.
    • Submit an one-page essay on method for building students' computational skills throughout a degree program. You must do this online using our essay submission form. If you do not have any computation-related assignments, please spend more time discussing approaches to developing computational skills of students in the essay below. Please do not email assignments to workshop conveners.

Prior to the workshop:

  • Upload your presentation file if you are giving an oral presentation at the workshop. This will give you an on-site backup copy and will allow us to post your presentation on the website. You should still plan to bring a copy of your file with you. You will have the option of giving your presentation from your own computer, or you may use one of our laptops (both PCs and Macs will be available).
  • Read all of the essays and become familiar with the activities submitted by your fellow workshop participants. We will send you a PDF of essays prior to the workshop.
  • Bring your laptop because we will use them in several of the workshop sessions.
