- Welcome and introduction
- Today's interactive demo is based primarily on what I've learned from being the project manager for SAGE 2YC: Faculty as Change Agents, which has been using Zoom for virtual PD for 4 years
- The functions I am showing you are available to the session host and (most functions) co-hosts. Zoom has excellent documentation of these features and how to use them.
- View options and etiquette
- I recommend you choose gallery view, open the participants window, and open the chat window
- Sharing video: presence/privacy, bandwidth
- Please mute yourself when you aren't talking -- you can press the "space" bar to unmute yourself temporarily
- Who is here? Using the "polling" tool in the host's zoom window, I'm going to launch a poll that Monica set up for me.
- Poll: MC question, with options
- EER M-W AM workshop leader;
- EER Th-F AM workshop leader;
- EER PM workshop leader;
- Early Career workshop leader;
- Other
- Note: anyone joining the session by phone cannot respond
- If you would like, your SERC support person can set up "blank" polls ready for you to launch as needed during your zoom session.
- Poll: MC question, with options
- How many of you are familiar with jigsaws (as a pedagogy)?
- Please raise your hand (literally or figuratively) if you are
- (Describe an example jigsaw activity)
- Think-pair-share
- Host assigns participants to breakout rooms (randomly or non-randomly)
- Anyone joining by phone is also sent to a breakout room - host has to manually choose which one
- ONLY hosts can assign participants to breakout rooms (co-hosts cannot)
- Hosts and co-hosts can migrate into and out of breakout rooms
- Participants can "call for help" from breakout rooms - host (and only the host) will see it
- Breakout rooms: How would you use breakout rooms to facilitate a jigsaw? What are the particular challenges of doing this in Zoom?
- Think (on your own)
- Pair: I will send you to (random) breakout rooms for 3 minutes. You will get a one-minute warning. Feel free to use the whole 3 minutes.
- Share: When you return from breakout rooms, you will be muted (you will be able to unmute yourself)
- Report out: I ask for volunteers, but choose whom to call on to report back to the group
- Side question, if time: what are the advantages of choosing whom to call on?
- Host assigns participants to breakout rooms (randomly or non-randomly)
- Case study / scenario
- Present a scenario or scenarios
- Breakout rooms: Discuss your assigned scenario in your group
- Report out: I ask for volunteers, but choose whom to call on to report back to the group
- Concept maps
- Let's collaboratively work on a concept map about online teaching
- Whiteboard: the whiteboard is one of the options for screen sharing
- Invite participants to annotate the whiteboard
- Host can save this when finished, if desired (participants can, too)
- Working group assignments
- Suppose you want working groups to work on a task for an extended time and to produce some kind of written record of their discussion. Options you might use for this are templated SERC workspace pages for each group or google documents. Your SERC support person can discuss your needs with you and help you choose the best option.
- As an example of this, please open the link that is for your workshop leader group

- When you "arrive" in your breakout room, discuss the question and type your responses:
- What engaged pedagogies are you currently planning to use in your workshop, and how will you use them?
- Open-ended questions:
- I will give everyone 4 minutes to reflect and type into the chat box, so that everyone has a chance to answer
- This gives you a chance to hear from everyone, not just those who type quickly
- Note: these are the kinds of questions that we will ask in your end-of-workshop evaluation form; this is just a demo of how you can use the chat function to ask open-ended questions.
- Answer either or both of these questions via chat:
- What have you learned about in today's session that you plan to use in your workshop to actively engage your participants?
- What interactive activity would you like to be able to do in your workshop that you're still not sure how to do in Zoom?
- I will give everyone 4 minutes to reflect and type into the chat box, so that everyone has a chance to answer
- Final comments: Please don't hesitate to contact your SERC support person as you are developing your plans. We want your workshop to be engaging and successful, and we will do what we can to support your efforts.
