In order for students to be successful in their online geoscience lab courses, the courses need to be designed with quality and engagement from the beginning. A decade of experience developing and teaching online geoscience classes has given Jennifer Lewis an intuitive understanding of the course design factors that contribute to student success in the online format.

Whether you are looking to modify your existing courses or are looking to begin your own online course design, this session will allow you to identify the five key components found in successful and highly engaging online geoscience lab courses. Jennifer will be on hand during the poster session to answer questions and provide examples from online earth science and geology courses offered at a two-year community college.  It is hoped that these examples will highlight how the key components can be incorporated into different online geoscience labs and how each component creates an environment that promotes both the understanding of geoscience and the students' success.
