Workshop Timing

An overview of the schedule for the workshop is shown below. The workshop will be begin at 8 am on Thursday, January 9th. All workshop activities will end by 3 pm on Friday, January 10th.

Thursday, January 9

8:00am-5:00 pm - Full day of sessions. Breakfast and lunch are included.

6:00pm-8:00pm - Networking Reception

Friday, January 10

8:00am-3:00pm - Morning sessions, followed by a lunch panel and wrap up at the end of the workshop.

Travel

Participants are responsible for their travel to and from the workshop.

Travel by Air

The closest airport is the Kansas City International Airport (MCI) located in Kansas City, Missouri. It is approximately 40 minutes away from the University of Kansas. Participants should plan to arrive on Wednesday, January 8th.

Travel by Car

If you are traveling south to Lawrence, you can use I-29 or I-35 to connect to Kansas City. From there, take I-435 S to connect to I-70 W. The University of Kansas is located off of Exit 202.

If you are traveling north to Lawrence, you can use I-35 to connect to Topeka and then take I-70 E into Lawrence. If you are driving up from further east, you can use I-49 to connect into Kansas City. From there, take I-435 W to connect to Highway 10 towards Lawrence.

If you are traveling east or west to Lawrence, I-70 cuts directly through the town of Lawrence. The University of Kansas is located off of Exit 202.

Communications

WiFi will be available at hotels and on campus. Participants will not need a laptop for the workshop, but are welcome to bring theirs.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided on Thursday, January 9th. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on Friday, January 10th.

    • January weather in Lawrence averages a high of 40 degrees Fahrenheit and average lows of 21 degrees Fahrenheit, so make sure to bring your jacket and scarf!
  • Fun things to do and see while in Lawrence
    • The KU Natural History Museum: The University of Kansas Natural History Museum is located on Jayhawk Boulevard at the heart of KU's campus. It is a part of the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute that is devoted to studying the diversity of life on Earth. The galleries are housed in historic Dyche Hall, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
    • Downtown Lawrence (Massachusetts Street): Located in the central business district of downtown Lawrence, Massachusetts Street, also known as Mass Street, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Lawrence, Kansas. It is a historic district that begins south of the Kansas River at Sixth Street and runs south to Haskell Indian Nations University.
    • Clinton State Park: Clinton State Park is located about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) west of Lawrence. Made up of 1,500 acres of land lying on the north shore of Clinton Lake, the park is popular for its wide range of outdoor activities. There is a biking and hiking trail that connects to the adjacent 9,200 acre wildlife area.
    • Spencer Museum of Art: The Spencer Museum of Art opened its doors in 1928 with a core collection of 7,500 art objects donated to the University of Kansas by Kansas City art collector Sallie Casey Thayer. She hoped that her gift would promote study and appreciation of fine arts in the area. The eclectic collection contained paintings, prints, sculpture, drawings, rugs, furniture, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, glass, and many other pieces of decorative arts. Since then, the collection has grown, and in 1978, it moved to its present larger location, a magnificent neo-classical building made from Indiana limestone.
