Postdoc Research & Teaching in Atmospheric Science
published Dec 8, 2021 12:52pmThe Atmospheric Science Research Group at Hobart and William Smith Colleges is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to:
1. contribute to NSF-funded research on lake-effect snowstorms in the Great Lakes region
2. teach one undergraduate course in atmospheric science each year
3. mentor undergraduate researchers as part of an established summer research program
The research will provide new understanding of complex interactions that influence mesoscale and convective boundary layer thermodynamics and dynamics in lake-effect environments. These interactions span across multiple spatiotemporal scales, including interactions of synoptic-scale systems with mesoscale systems.
The teaching responsibilities associated with this position are one course per academic year on a topic that complements the current atmospheric science offerings at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
This position will also include research mentorship responsibilities of undergraduate researchers during the summer program of the Northeast Partnership for Atmospheric and Related Sciences (NEPARS) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
Terms of appointment are for one year, renewable for one additional year, subject to satisfactory performance and continued grant funding. Applicants from demographic groups underrepresented in the atmospheric sciences are especially encouraged to apply.
Qualifications
- Researchers with interests in winter storms, mesoscale dynamics, and/or mesoscale numerical weather prediction are encouraged to apply.
- By the start of the position, candidates should hold a PhD in atmospheric science or a closely related discipline, conferred within the last three years, from a college or university accredited by the U.S Dept. of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
- They should have the ability to work both independently, collaborate with members of a group, and mentor undergraduate researchers.
- They should also have experience working with numerical weather prediction models, model output, and observational datasets.
