Logistics and Travel

Dates

The workshop will begin at 6:00 pm on Friday evening July 14, 2006 and will end after dinner on Tuesday, July 18, 2006. Participants must attend all sessions through July 18.

Optional activities including a field trip as well as a visit to core facilities at the Utah Geological Survey will be offered on Wednesday, July 19th. More information about these options is given in the workshop program.

Facilities

The workshop will be held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. Workshop participants will be housed in double rooms at the University Guest House, shown on this map; the address is 110 South Fort Douglas Blvd. and their toll-free number is 1-888-416-4075. Unless other arrangements are made, participants will share double rooms with two beds. We are able to offer single rooms (at an additional cost) to participants who would prefer a single. The Guest House provides internet access in each room, including wireless access. Information regarding internet access will be provided during check-in. There is a small fitness room. The Guest House also provides a complimentary continental breakfast.

The workshop sessions will take place in the Officer's Club (with some sessions held in the Commander's House), a few minutes walk from the Guest House. The Officer's Club will have wireless access. Most meals will be in the cafeteria in the Heritage Center, several minutes walk from the Officer's Club.

Travel

Participants must make their own way to Salt Lake City by 5:00 pm on July 14th. Salt Lake City International Airport is about 10 miles from the University of Utah.

To get from the airport to the University, participants may choose to rent a car at the airport (at their own expense), or to take a taxi, limo or shuttle (also at their own expense). Shortly before the workshop, we will provide everyone with a list of flights and arrivals of all participants so that those who are interested can contact one another to share rides.

Directions to Guest House

From the airport: Take I-80 eastbound to the City Center exit. Head east on 600 South to State Street, turn left to 400 South, then right. On 400 South, climb the hill up past the football stadium to Wasatch Boulevard. Turn left. Stay on Wasatch Blvd as it bends right and climbs toward the hospitals. The Guest House is your first right turn.

From Downtown Salt Lake City Take the TRAX University Line eastbound. Get off at the Fort Douglas stop. The Guest House is just east of that stop, over the footbridge. Numerous UTA bus lines also run from downtown to the University.

We have reserved the Officer's Club parking lot for participant parking on campus.

Cost

NSF Grant DUE-0127310 will provide funding for the operational costs of the workshop plus room, board, and workshop materials. Participants or their home institutions must provide transportation to and from the workshop. We will be able to offer a limited number of small travel stipends to participants from institutions unable to cover travel costs. The deadline for application for travel stipends was April 26, 2006.
