Logistics and Transportation

The workshop will officially begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2008 with a reception and dinner at Carleton College. Check-In for your accommodations at St.Olaf College is from 3:00-5:00pm at Ytterboe Residence Hall campus map Please make your plans so that you will be able to check in and attend this opening session. The workshop will conclude after dinner on Thursday, July 17th. It is essential that you attend the full workshop including the full day on Thursday.

Travel by Air

Air travelers should fly into the Minneapolis - St. Paul airport (MSP), and we recommend arriving no later than 3:00 PM on Monday, July 14. Departures should be scheduled for Friday, July 18. Travel to and from the airport takes 45 minutes. A shuttle service to and from the airport will be arranged for you based on the travel information that you submit to us via the registration form. This shuttle service will be provided for you free of charge. Unfortunately, we will not be able to cover the costs of rental cars or personal taxi service.

Directions from Minneapolis/Saint Paul to Northfield

  • I-35W South to Highway 19 East (exit 69, Northfield exit).
  • Drive east on Highway 19, 6 miles to Northfield.
  • You will see the entrance to St. Olaf on your left. Climb the hill and follow road to Ytterboe Residence Hall

Directions approaching Northfield from southern Minnesota

  • I-35 North to Highway 19 East (exit 69, Northfield exit).
  • Drive east on Highway 19, 6 miles to Northfield.
  • You will see the entrance to St. Olaf on your left. Climb the hill and follow road to Ytterboe Residence Hall
  • If you choose to drive, but not come on I-35, please contact John (507-222-5749) for directions coming into Northfield on another highway.

If you are going directly to the opening dinner at Carleton College, continue on Hwy 19 into Northfield and at the first stop light (where Highway 19 merges with Highway 3), turn left. Continue north on Hwy 3 to the next light, and turn right on Second Street. Stay on Second Street, turning left on College Street. Go two blocks and you'll be on campus. Refer to the campus map for more detail.

Parking:

All overnight guest parking is in the Skoglund/Tostrud parking lot and no permit is required. Guests visiting for the day may park in any spot marked "Faculty/Staff/Visitor Parking." The most centrally located parking lot is north of the Buntrock Commons.

Lodging

Room reservations have been made for everyone attending the workshop in Ytterboe Residence Hall. Each participant will have an air-conditioned, private room, with a phone and internet service. Your room will have a single bed, towels and soap. If you would like to share a room, with two twin beds, let us know on the registration form. If you are using the airport shuttle, they will deliver you directly to the Check-In area at St. Olaf. Directions & transportation information to dinner at Carleton will be in your welcome packet upon check-in.

Communications

You will have a telephone in your dorm room at St. Olaf College. Guests need to dial "9" to reach an outside line. Long distance calls may be made by using a phone card or making a collect call. There will be internet access in each room. Internet access will also be available in the meeting rooms.

  • Messages to campus guests: Messages may be left for all campus guests at 507-786-3031. This is a 24 hour message service. Please clearly state the name of the person for whom you are leaving a message and the event this guest is attending. Messages are checked at frequent intervals during the day and will be delivered to the event leader for delivery to the guest.
  • Emergency After Hours Messages: Campus security will deliver emergency messages between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Dial 507-786-3666 to leave a message. Please use this service only for emergencies.

Meals

Breakfasts and lunches will be served in the St. Olaf dining center. Dinners will be catered events with an excursion to a local restaurant. All meals will include vegetarian offerings. Please provide information on the registration form if you require special meals or have food allergies.

The price of all meals and gratuities during the workshop is covered by our grant from the National Science Foundation. However, the grant does not cover alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase during some meal-times.

What to expect

Northfield is a small town about 35 miles south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Mid July brings summer temperatures, usually in the high 70's and 80's. Shuttle service will be provided for all off-campus activities. It's about a 1/2 mile walk to downtown Northfield from St. Olaf's campus.
