Workshop Overview

The Early Career Geoscience Faculty workshop is for faculty in their first three years of a faculty position. It will take place June 21-25, 2026, with an optional virtual visit to the National Science Foundation after the workshop. If you are in the process of applying for tenure-track or other permanent faculty positions, we encourage you to apply to the Preparing for an Academic Career workshop, which is hosted at Earth Educators Rendezvous.

Workshop Goals for Participants

Learn about setting course goals, strategies for active learning, and methods for assessment.
Share ideas and strategies for teaching one or more courses.
Consider successful strategies for maintaining an active research program and advising/supervising undergraduate and/or graduate research students.
Discuss life as an early-career faculty member and explore ways to balance teaching, research, and service responsibilities.
Leave with examples of assignments and activities for various courses, strategies for balancing competing demands, a support network of other early career faculty, and a plan for managing your early career as an academic.

Cost

Workshop costs: The registration fee for the 2026 workshop will be announced by February 2026. Lodging, breakfasts, lunches (for those staying in workshop lodging) and some dinners are included in the cost of registration. There may be stipends available for eligible* participants to help defray costs of registration and travel. The registration fee includes a membership in NAGT, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, through 12/31/2026 (an $85 value).

Travel: Participants or their home institutions must provide transportation to and from the workshop.

Stipends: In cases where the cost of attending this workshop would cause financial hardship, you may be able to apply for a stipend to defray the costs. We will notify you of your stipend application status prior to the registration deadline. Registration fees are paid at the time of registration (before the workshop) and stipends will be disbursed following the workshop, provided the participant participates in the full workshop and meets the eligibility requirements.

*To be eligible for the stipend, the participant must be a US citizen or permanent resident. Applicants with work visas are encouraged to contact the workshop conveners for additional information about reimbursement eligibility.

Application and Selection Criteria

The workshop size is limited. The final list of participants will be established with the goal of assembling a group representing a wide range of experiences and educational environments. Priority is given to applicants entering their second or third years in tenure-track (or equivalent) positions in the geosciences.

Facilities

The workshop will be held at Macalester College, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, beginning the afternoon of Sunday, June 21, and ending the evening of Thursday, June 25, 2026.
