Workshop Logistics and Travel Information

Dates

The workshop will be held July 6 - 9, 2005. The first workshop activity will take place on the evening of Wednesday, July 6 at 5 PM, starting with an icebreaker event, dinner, and an opening session. The workshop activities will continue through Thursday and Friday, July 7 - 8, and there will be an all-day field trip in the Puget Sound area on Saturday, July 9. Participants should plan to attend all sessions. Departures should be scheduled for Sunday, July 10.

Venue

The workshop is hosted by the School of Oceanography at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Cost

The workshop itself is free. NSF Grant DUE-0127310 will provide funding for the operational costs of the workshop plus room, board, and workshop materials. Participants or their home institutions must provide transportation to and from the workshop. We will be able to offer small travel stipends to participants from institutions unable to cover travel costs. The deadline for application for travel stipends is May 1.

Travel

Participants should plan to travel to Seattle, WA, on Wednesday, July 6, early enough to attend the opening reception and dinner. You should take an airport shuttle to/from the airport to the hotel/campus area. Several major airlines provide service to Seattle. Departures can be anytime on Sunday July 10.

Meals

Continental breakfasts will be available on workshop days at the Waterton Hotel. Lunches and dinners will be catered on campus and in local restaurants except for Friday and Saturday nights (post-workshop and post-field trip; on your own, on the town). Please let us know of any food restrictions/preferences via the registration form or contact the conveners directly.

Dress

Decidedly casual! Be comfortable. Summer in Seattle is quite pleasant, but be prepared -- it can always rain and temperatures can range from chilly to hot. We will be out all day on a field trip near the water, so be prepared for wind and rain. Check the weather forecast before you come!

Registration

Participation in the workshop requires acceptance through the application process. All accepted participants must register (form available on-line here in late March). Registration is a commitment to participate in all workshop activities. Registrants who withdraw from the workshop will incur any related costs if we can't find a replacement, except in the case of extenuating circumstances (such as a personal emergency).
