Course Context:

This is an introductory course with no pre-requisites and it does not serve as a prerequisite for other courses.
Students take the course to fulfill a science requirement for a two-year degree. The course transfers to four-year institutions.

Course Goals:

At the conclusion of the class, the successful students should be able to:
· read, analyze and interpret maps so as to recognize their usefulness and limitations.
· evaluate the underlying influence of seasons and weather on their daily lives.
· predict climate and vegetation characteristics in unfamiliar areas.

How course activities and course structure help students achieve these goals:

A semester long weekly activity on climates and biomes will enable students to build up knowledge at a
reasonable pace and will give them the tools to be able to predict climate and vegetation in unfamiliar areas.

Skills Goals

At the conclusion of the class, the successful student should be able to:
· read, interpret and draw graphs using scientific data.
· do simple calculations involving fractions and/or proportions.
· access and evaluate information for relevancy and usefulness on the World Wide Web.

How course activities and course structure help students achieve these goals:

Students will get experience graphing throughout the semester: climographs as well as graphs of temperature,
pressure, solar radiation, relative humidity, against time.

Students will have many opportunities to practice calculations with fractions and/or proportions: map scale,
relative humidity, conversions between different units of pressure or temperature.

Students will have to access the WWW on a weekly basis to find out climate and vegetation information
for their semester long activity on climates and biomes.
