Vignettes are stand-alone, illustrated electronic case studies that teach about geomorphology, surface processes, and/or Quaternary history. Vignettes can be used alone or in combination with the "Key Concepts in Geomorphology", the first in a new generation of textbooks. Vignettes allow faculty to customize the learning resources they offer students to enrich and personalize student learning experiences.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and what coral reefs can tell us about changes of sea level
Colin Woodroffe
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean are the only atoll that Charles Darwin visited during the voyage of the Beagle.Darwin had developed a theory that gradual subsidence of volcanic islands in ...

Balls Pyramid and the efficacy of marine abrasion
Colin Woodroffe
Balls Pyramid is a striking example of the penultimate stage in the marine planation of a volcanic island. It is a remarkable monolith of basalt that rises spectacularly to a height of 551 m (Fig. 1), as wave ...

Effects of 4-Wheel Drive Vehicles on Beach Sediment Transport
Timothy Austin
The use of 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles on coastal beaches is an activity that attracts considerable controversy amongst beach users. 4WD vehicles are currently permitted access to hundreds of beaches throughout ...

The continental dunefield of Australia
Paul Hesse
Dunefields cover a large portion of the Australian continent in areas with favourable topography, climate and sand supply. The main areas of dunes lie in a diagonal band across the continent from the Mallee ...

Salt Karst: Mount Sedom diapir
amos frumkin
A unique, rapidly evolving karst landscape is described below. It develops on salt rock (halite) at such a rate that a human lifetime is enough to observe considerable geomorphic variations. Halite is the most ...

Does Moss Grow on A Rolling Stone? Assessing the Influence of Hydrologic Regime on Bed Load Transport and In-Stream Primary Producers in Steep Mountain Channels
Christopher Tennant, Idaho State University
Conceptual Setup It has long been realized that earth systems are open, interconnected, and exhibit complex and emergent patterns as a result of natural forcings. As an example of such interactions, consider the ...

The Drying of Sierra Nevada Wet Meadows Impacted by Channel Incision and Opportunities for Restoration
Eric Booth, University of Wisconsin-Madison
The Connection Between Groundwater and Stream Channels: When considering the water cycle of a watershed, stream valleys represent a zone where terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems interact through the exchange of ...

Geomorphic controls on the slackwater deposition: Example from the Mahi River Basin, western India
Alpa Sridhar
The river basins of western India are characterized by colossal deposits of marine, fluvial and aeolian origin. A major bulk of these sediments has been deposited during the late Pleistocene under climatic and ...

The Largest Landslides on Earth
Oliver Korup
In landscape evolution, landslides are thought to play a prime role in controlling hillslope erosional response to tectonic, climatic, and anthropogenic forcing (e.g. Korup et al., 2007; Hewitt et al., 2008). ...

Impact of deforestation on slope stability
veerle vanacker
Slope movement is a widespread hazard in mountainous regions around the world. Consequently, not only considerable financial costs are suffered, but also major ecological and environmental problems arise in a ...
