The Using Data in the Classroom project was active between 2003 and 2010. Much of the content dates from that time period and so may not be up to date. We are preserving the content here because it still contains useful ideas.

The Activities Collection draws from newer projects across SERC. You may also want to explore the Data and Models resources discoverable through Teach the Earth

April 30 through May 3, 2008

What?

The AccessData workshop will provide an opportunity for data representatives, software tool specialists, scientific researchers, curriculum developers, and educators to interact with one another in a variety of sessions, all working toward the common goal of facilitating the use of data in education.

Who?

We are actively working to identify a range of data providers and analysis tool experts to participate in the meeting. If your organization is interested in participating, please contact Tamara Ledley (tamara_ledley at terc.edu).

Scientists, educational materials developers, and college- and high school-level educators who work with data in the Earth and environmental sciences are also invited to communicate their interest.

What will happen during the workshop?

In addition to keynote presentations, hands-on lab sessions (Tool Time) and a Demo Session/Share Fair, attendees will be grouped into teams that include the full range of roles represented at the meeting. Team members will work together to develop an educational module, drawing upon the expertise of individuals in each role on the team. This practical exercise enables team members to learn from each other about the needs, practices, and expectations of the other groups.

Who will pay?

Lodging, breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided for all accepted registrants. Funding is also available for travel stipends; this will be awarded as necessary to ensure that all professional roles will be represented at the meeting. To minimize paperwork, all participants will be asked to pay for their own travel up front. At the workshop, participants will sign the appropriate form to request their travel stipend, and checks will be mailed to them within 30 days.

When should I arrange to arrive in and depart from Portland?

We anticipate that attendees will arrive in Portland mid-day on Wednesday, April 30.

For transportation to the Embassy Suites, the MAX Light rail is just outside the baggage pickup area at the airport. The cost is $2.05 each way. The trains leave the airport every 12 minutes-This is the Redline Train. Your stop is 1st Avenue and Oak Street. From the stop exit the car and go right to Oak, then turn left on Oak and take the side walk to 3rd Avenue then turn right and walk 1 block up to Pine Street - you will see the Hotel sign ahead as you turn right on Oak. The hotel entrance is in the middle of the street between 3rd and 4th Avenue.

The workshop runs from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30 through 12 noon on Saturday, May 3, 2008. All times are Pacific Daylight Time. The first event is a demonstration/poster session from 6:00 to 10:00 pm the evening of Wednesday, April 30. You may register during this event.

For departure on Saturday, May 3, we will have a sign up sheet for times to the airport for cab share if you do not wish to take the light rail.
