Investigative Case - "Malama Keone'o'io" part of Starting Point-Teaching Entry Level Geoscience:Investigative Case Based Learning:Examples
Students will learn techniques for conducting a local environmental assessment in an ecologically sensitive area. Identification of native plants and methodologies for sampling will be taught in the classroom and then reinforced in the field. The module also includes a community awareness and conservation aspect.

This field biology class uses a service-learning project instead of a course term paper. The students worked with 4th and 5th graders at a local school to teach them skills in wildflower and fern identification, and then to help them implement a nature trail, which will be accessible to the greater community.
