Climate Crisis Mini-Unit
Summary
This mini-unit includes topics including climate anxiety, climate justice, climate activism, wide-scale climate, among others. Each day there is a new topic, and a do-now, activity and reflection. The goals of this curriculum are to get students interested, knowledgeable and engaged with climate activism.
Context
Audience
This curriculum is designed for 9th grade English Language Arts courses. Nonetheless, the grade level is flexible and could be used for from grades 6-12.
Skills and concepts that students must have mastered
Students should be able to read and comprehend high school level texts, have sufficient audio and visual processing skills and be able to work in a team.
How the activity is situated in the course
The curriculum is made up of 8 days of work. Each day there is a topic to be explored throughout the daily do-now, short lesson, activity and reflection.
Goals
Content/concepts goals for this activity
The content covered is climate science, effects of climate change, climate justice, how climate change is personal, climate anxiety, global climate solutions and climate anxiety. The goals are for students to have a good understanding of the concepts listed, and meet 9th grade ELA common core reading and writing standards. These can be adjusted for the grade level.
Higher order thinking skills goals for this activity
The high order thinking skills used are analyzing, comprehending and evaluation. These are gained by activities such as exploring the WA Department of Heath (DOH) Heath Disparities Map and analyzing it. As well as evaluating one's personal life on how it intersects with climate change.
Skills goals for this activity
Another goal is for students to become more curious about our world and involved in climate activism.
