Description and Teaching Materials

Students read a blog post published by the European Geosciences Union highlighting the work of Black geoscientists. Each student chooses one scientist with a job that sounds interesting to the student and writes a description for their classmates, in their own words, about what that scientist does. Students also respond to their classmates' posts. I provide some resources where students can learn about geoscience careers to supplement the EGU blog post.

Teaching Notes and Tips

This activity could also be done as a jigsaw in the classroom or on zoom. Initial groups would each be assigned one person from the EGU blog site. I am still thinking about the details of using this activity in this way.

Assessment

I am liberal with my grading for online discussions. I do not use a rubric, but give full credit to anyone who follows all of the instructions. Eighty percent of their grade is based upon their initial posting and 20% is based upon their response.
