Ground Shaking and Damage at Your House part of Integrate:Workshops and Webinars:Teaching about Risk and Resilience:Activities
    Carla Whittington, Highline Community College
In this activity, students use a seismic hazard map from the USGS to estimate the ground shaking hazard in their community. The map shows a 10% probability of ground accelerations reaching or exceeding a certain % ...

Using GPS data to analyze crustal strain -or- Where is the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates? part of Integrate:Workshops and Webinars:Engineering, Sustainability, and the Geosciences:Activities
    Laurel Goodell, Princeton University
Students determine and interpret crustal strain along the Pacific/North American plate boundary in southern California. They do this by using GPS time series data to plot strain ellipses in the study area, first by hand (to understand how the method works) and then by using provided Matlab code.

Think-Aloud Modeling of Geologic Reasoning in the Field part of Integrate:Workshops and Webinars:Teaching the Methods of Geoscience:Activities
Steve Reynolds, Arizona State University at the Tempe Campus
This activity involves explicitly sharing with students all the thoughts that occur to the instructor, as they occur, at a geologic field site. Assessment can be conducted with concept sketches.
