published Mar 5, 2018 12:00am

Objective:

To showcase efforts over the last decade in promoting equity and inclusion in the geosciences to engage and support a diverse community.

Background: In 2007, JGE published a special issue entitled Broadening Participation in the Earth Sciences (https://www.nagt.org/nagt/jge/abstracts/dec07.html). What have we learned and what progress have we made since then? In this new theme issue, we hope to explore issues on pipeline development, recruitment and retention, graduate education and special topics such as minority serving institutions and non-traditional opportunities in both case studies and broad research investigations.

Types of Papers: The following types of papers are solicited for the theme issue.

  • Research Papers that describe methods and results of original studies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the geosciences.
  • Curriculum & Instruction Papers that translate results of diversity and inclusion research into practice in courses, programs and/or institutions.
  • Commentaries that are literature-based and propose priorities for encouraging and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the geoscience community.
  • Literature Reviews that provide a comprehensive and insightful review of published work suggests future needs for research in diversity and the geosciences.

Manuscript Preparation and Submission

Potential authors should send an email "letter of intent" to agates@rutgers.edu by April 1, 2018 indicating the type and topic of their intended paper. This allows the theme editors to gauge the interest and extent of the special issue and to identify any overlap in submission topics. If overlap exists, editors may suggest ways for authors to either combine efforts or constrain topics more narrowly. The manuscript submission deadline is August 31, 2018. For information, including author instructions, please visit http://nagt-jge.org/. All submitted manuscripts should meet author guidelines and JGE review criteria. All submissions will be externally reviewed.
