Using the FEW-Nexus to Engage Middle Grade Students in Reasoning about Local Socio-Ecological Systems Issues, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

About Me

Howdy!

I am a first year PhD student in the department of Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education at Virginia Tech! I am from a small town in rural east Texas, and was an agricultural science teacher in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex prior to becoming a graduate student. Outside of academia I am a fitness enthusiast, I love photography, music, dancing, and a good movie.

Focus of current FEW-Nexus-based education work

My work looks at how social constructs of place (regionality, rurality, suburbia) effect how students view the FEW Nexus. I currently work with a summer camp that uses the FEW Systems framework to guide the experiences of the campers.

FEW-Nexus-based education experience, expertise and interests

I work with a summer camp for rural gifted youth where we use case studies to examine different aspects of the FEW-Nexus. I am also developing the case studies into a curriculum that high school agricultural science teachers can use to instruct students in inquiry-based lessons relating to the FEW-Nexus.
