Workshop Goals
The 2022 IMPACT workshop will:
- build on and draw from the Summer 2021 virtual IMPACT workshops to move the community forward in its approach to broader impacts for scientific ocean drilling
- create a blueprint for a science communication strategy that is an integral part of implementation of the 2050 Framework for Scientific Ocean Drilling
- develop a set of strategies with actionable plans for the next 5 years and beyond, and establish working groups for each of these strategies
- broaden the diversity of people working on all of the above, including but not limited to racial equity in STEM, community colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and especially people and communities who have traditionally not participated in scientific ocean drilling
Dates
The workshop will be held in person June 14-15, 2022, with some hybrid participation options. June 13 and 16 will be designated as travel days.
Expectations
In advance:
Each participant has agreed to each of the following COVID-19 related protocols:
- I am vaccinated or I will have a 3rd party COVID test 72 hours before the beginning of the workshop and will only attend in person events if my test result is negative.
- I will comply with all federal, state, local, and workshop-specific health and safety guidelines. I understand that guidelines may change. I will be prepared to show my vaccination card or negative third party test results if needed. I will be prepared to wear an N95 or equivalent mask at all indoor events if needed.
- I will utilize the rapid antigen tests provided by the U.S. Science Support Program each morning of the workshop, and will self-isolate if I test positive.
- I will not attend the workshop in person if I test positive for COVID-19 or if I have covid-like symptoms. If I develop symptoms during the workshop I will leave the workshop and follow isolation protocols.
Prior to the workshop, we strongly encourage you to read the summary reports from the Summer 2021 IMPACT workshops:
- Engaging the Public workshop summary
- Informing Policymakers workshop summary
- Preparing the Next Generation workshop summary
During the workshop:
Participants are expected to adhere to the Code of Conduct at all times. We have adopted the IODP Code of Conduct.
During the workshop, we ask that you engage with the presentations, presenters, and other attendees through attending talks and events. We also highly encourage participants to continuebuilding collaborations and sharing ideas outside of the workshop hours, if possible.
Following the workshop:
After the workshop, attendees should continue to facilitate conversations among themselves and their groups. Our sincere hope is that this workshop provides the foundation for which attendees and their colleagues can begin to work on concrete action items to forward the Broader Impacts asoutlined in the 2050 Framework for Scientific Ocean Drilling.
Costs
There are no costs to participate in the June 2022 IMPACT workshop. If selected, costs for travel, lodging and attendance will be provided by the U.S. Science Support Program, not to exceed Federal guidelines for conference costs in the Washington, D.C. area.
Application and Selection Criteria
We are seeking a diverse group of participants, across many demographics (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, geography), those who are familiar with current scientific ocean drilling programs and those who are not, a range of career levels and experience, a range of types of organizations/workplaces/functions, and who are keen to broaden participation in the program beyond its historical audiences. We are especially interested in establishing new relationships with individuals and organizations who have not previously been involved in scientific ocean drilling, including those from historically underrepresented communities. Teams are encouraged. If you would like to join us with a colleague, please indicate the name of your partner and their organization. Partnerships can be within one organization or across organizations. Both partners need to fill out the application form and indicate their partners on the form.
The workshop will be limited to 75 participants. Depending on the number of applications received, decisions about who will attend will be made based on assembling a diverse group positioned to participate fully.
To apply, complete the application form by April 30. Participants will be notified of their acceptance status by May 6, 2022.
Facilities
The workshop will take place at AGU Headquarters in Washington, DC.
Current COVID requirements (subject to change) include: showing of vaccination card or negative COVID test within 24 hours and indoor masking except when eating.
