For the Instructor
These student materials complement the Coastal Processes, Hazards and Society Instructor Materials. If you would like your students to have access to the student materials, we suggest you either point them at the Student Version which omits the framing pages with information designed for faculty (and this box). Or you can download these pages in several formats that you can include in your course website or local Learning Managment System. Here you will identify the types of vulnerability of coastal populations.
The box below contains a list of components of the human-environment system that could contribute to the vulnerability of U.S. coastal residents to hurricane winds and storm surge. Each of the components in the box contributes primarily to one of the three dimensions of hurricane vulnerability: exposure, sensitivity, or adaptive capacity.
To complete the first part of the activity, match each of these components with the appropriate dimension of hurricane vulnerability. To match a component with a dimension, click on the component in the box and drag it into the appropriate section of the Vulnerability Scoping Diagram (VSD): Exposure, Sensitivity, or Adaptive Capacity. If the drag and drop function does not work, print or sketch the VSD and write each of the components into the appropriate section of the VSD.
Components
To sort the components, use the worksheet to add them to the appropriate VSD section in the diagram below.
Hazard Frequency | Shape of Coastal Landscape | Vehicle availability |
Number of People in Hazard Zone | Age | Poverty |
Minority Populations | Higher Median household income | Higher educational attainment |
