For the Instructor
These student materials complement the Coastal Processes, Hazards and Society Instructor Materials. If you would like your students to have access to the student materials, we suggest you either point them at the Student Version which omits the framing pages with information designed for faculty (and this box). Summative Assessment: Case Studies
Objectives for Case Study Assignments
The remainder of this week is based on activities that are directly linked to the objectives of Module 1. In the activities that follow, we present two case studies of coastal communities at risk from coastal hazards. You will be using Google Earth and GeoMapApp tours to explore these communities (each assessment is a Google Earth or a GeoMapApp tour of one of the two communities). Finally, you will compare and contrast economic factors that drive society in the two communities. The goal is for you to become fully comfortable using Google Earth and GeoMapApp.
Instructions for Working through the Case Studies
You must have taken the Google Earth and GeoMapApp tutorials in the Orientation to proceed. If you did not complete both tutorials last week, please work through them now. Go to the Tutorials Now. To really familiarize yourselves with both Google Earth and GeoMapApp, you will be working through two case studies of cities with coastal regions at risk: Guangzhou, China and New Orleans, LA. The best strategy is to first read over the instructions so you have everything set up on your computer correctly and have a good understanding of what you will need to do. Next, read the profile for Guangzhou and complete the activities for it, then repeat for New Orleans. You can do all of the Google Earth activities first and then do all of the GeoMapApp activities after that, or you can do both activities for Guangzhou then move on to New Orleans. Whichever option is most logical to you is what you should choose. Finally you will synthesize what you learned about the two cities and how they compare.
You will need to download the documents linked below to complete the assignments to turn in to be graded. Before you start the assignment, read over the rubric to understand how the assignment will be graded. Reread the rubric again after you have completed the assignment to make sure you have included everything required to earn the highest score possible. Just follow the directions provided in the online materials linked below and in the menu. Once you are ready, enter your answers into the document. Once you are done with all of the assignments, turn the completed document into your instructor following the directions provided in your syllabus.
