Week 8: Monitoring Fires

Use Fire Data to Review GIS Basics

This week, you will review GIS skills and analysis techniques that you have learned in the past three weeks. These include:

  • turning layers on and off
  • zooming and panning within layers
  • working with the data tables linked to the map
  • performing database queries
  • performing spatial queries
  • symbolizing geographic data
  • classifying geographic data
  • bringing latitude/longitude data into a GIS

You will have the opportunity to practice these skills and techniques while investigating fire data. The one new technique you will learn is how to gather statistics on numeric fields you query. Your task this week is to apply at least two of the skills you have learned to generate a map that tells a story of interest to you and that is applicable to your teaching situation.
