Background Information

Dr. Smirnova is a member of the Economics faculty at the University of Connecticut. In addition to publications on economics and economic education, Dr. Smirnova has more than 20 years of teaching experience in a diverse range of settings. After working as an economist for the City of New York at the Office of Management and Budget, she was a tenured Associate Professor of Economics and Finance at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx, New York, and subsequently the Director of Education at the American Institute for Economic Research, a non-for-profit think-tank in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Throughout her career, Dr. Smirnova has developed successful educational programs and taught students from high school, college, and graduate school, high school teachers, and survivors of intimate partner violence.

The common thread in Natalia's educational work is her passion for teaching economic and financial literacy. She has helped scores of students, many teachers, and families become knowledgeable about basic financial concepts and take an informed approach to financial decision-making.

Dr. Smirnova received a Wal-Mart Teaching Excellence Award from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

In this program, Natalia is eager to learn the TBL pedagogy and excited to implement it in her classes at UCONN.
