The workshop itself is free; but attendees must be registered for AGU, have a badge and potentially present proof of vaccination (as per AGU guidelines). Registration will open in September via the link above. Upon selecting this workshop on the registration portal, you will receive a pending message as this workshop is meant for those who are academic department leaders. Once your registration is approved, you will receive an approval message guaranteeing your seat for the workshop.

Early bird registration ends in November. Join AGU or renew your membership before registering to take advantage of early bird member registration rates. This one-day workshop provides an opportunity for heads and chairs of Earth and Space Science departments to discuss issues and strategies for building a strong department, meet other heads and chairs, and learn more about current issues. The workshop program includes sessions on the topics listed below.

Morning Session

8:30 - 9:30 am "Advancing Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEMM Organizations: Beyond Broadening Participation" Report Discussion Session (Dr. Emily Vargas, Program Officer, National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, Dr. David Asai, former Senior Director for Science Education, Howard Hughes Medical Institute)

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a committee, and developed a newly-released consensus report titled Advancing Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEMM Organizations: Beyond Broadening Participation, which synthesizes the existing body of research on antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) in STEMM organizations and providesguidance and a set of recommendations for stakeholders across the STEMM enterprise to build ADEI into existing systems. This session will give an overview of the entire report and the set of recommendations within it. This event will also include a breakout discussion with guided questions for those in attendance.

9:30 am - 12:00 pm Fundamentals of Equity in Graduate Admissions (Dr. Nadine Kabengi, Associate Dean, Graduate School and Associate Professor, Geosciences, Georgia State University and Dr. Román Liera, Assistant Professor, Educational Leadership, Montclair State University)

In this session, data and research are presented about the role of typical admissions practices in maintaining racial/ethnic inequalities in graduate education, as well as strategies for more equitable processes and outcomes. Funding for this portion of the workshop was provided by the Inclusive Graduate Education Network (IGEN)

1:00 - 3:00 pm Strategies for Equity-based Holistic Review (Dr. Nadine Kabengi, Associate Dean, Graduate School and Associate Professor, Geosciences, Georgia State University and Dr. Román Liera, Assistant Professor, Educational Leadership, Montclair State University)

This session will help guide graduate admissions committee members and department leaders in articulating and assessing their current admissions practices, learn how to develop an evaluation rubric that can be put to use and engage in discussions that will help to identify anticipated challenges that may arise in shifting admissions practices. Funding for this portion of the workshop was provided by the Inclusive Graduate Education Network (IGEN)
