2015 Workshop for Heads and Chairs of Earth and Space Sciences Departments

Workshop registration is closed.
This one-day workshop provides an opportunity for heads and chairs of Earth and Space Science departments to discuss issues and strategies for building a strong department, meet other heads and chairs, and learn more about current issues. The workshop program will include the following:
- Welcome by Pranoti Asher, Manager of Education and Public Outreach, AGU
- Introduction by Gary Solar, Buffalo State College and Chair, Board of AGU Heads and Chairs
- Morning sessions (offered by the Building Strong Geoscience Departments Program and the Executive Committee of the Board of Heads & Chairs)
- The Two-Body Opportunity (Presented by Mary Anne Holmes, University of Nebraska, Lincoln)
- Work-life Balance (Presented by Rebecca Haacker, Director of SOARS, UCAR)
- Small-group discussions on specific topics based on participant interest (TBD)
- Updates from AGI on the status of geoscience workforce (Chris Keane, AGI) and from the Geoscience Employer Workshop Outcomes (Sharon Mosher, UT Austin)
- Lunch – small group discussions and business meeting
- As part of the business meeting during lunch, we will elect new members of the Executive Committee of the Board of Heads & Chairs.
- Afternoon sessions (supported by AGU Education and Public Outreach)
- Program Assessment (Presented by David Mogk, Montana State University)
- The Importance of Culture in Building Strong Departments (Presented by Jacqueline Huntoon, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Michigan Technological University)
- Enhancing the Institutional Value of Your Department (Presented by Lisa Rossbacher, President, Humboldt State University and Dallas Rhodes, Humboldt State University)
- Updates on NSF opportunities (Carol Frost, EAR Division Director, NSF), InTeGrate opportunities for 2016 (Cathy Manduca, SERC), and EarthCube (Marjorie Chan, University of Utah and Denise Hills, Geological Survey of Alabama).
