CourseSource Writing Studio application is open!

published Mar 30, 2020 9:28am
In partnership with Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research (SABER) meeting, CourseSource (https://www.coursesource.org/) is hosting a Writing Studio Short Course starting with dinner on Tuesday, July 21st and going through lunch on Thursday, July 23rd in Minneapolis, MN. We understand that things are difficult right now and travel situations are hard to predict. We will make informed decisions about meeting in person as we get closer to the date. For now, we want to go ahead with the application process so that we can move forward with providing this opportunity, potentially online if needed.

We acknowledge that many of you needed to quickly switch to online education this spring. CourseSource is supportive of your efforts and hopes that you will consider sharing your innovative ideas through future publications.

About CourseSource
CourseSource is a peer-reviewed and open-access journal that publishes tested, evidence-based undergraduate activities for life sciences. The articles include details in a format, style, and voice that supports replicability. Publishing activities in CourseSource provides authors with recognition of the creativity, experience, and time needed to develop effective classroom materials, while also supporting the dissemination of evidence-based teaching practices. Authors can list CourseSource articles in the peer-reviewed publication section of their curriculum vitae and use them as evidence for excellence in teaching.

Eligibility
The Writing Studio Short Course is open to instructors (including faculty, graduate students, and postdocs) who teach biology to undergraduate students and are planning to publish an activity in CourseSource. Participants must commit to attending the full Writing Studio Short Course - from 7/21 evening through 7/23 afternoon.

We are very sorry but due to funding limitations, we can only fund individuals who are currently affiliated with US institutions. Preference is given to applicants who have taught the activity that they will be working on at the Writing Studio and who have not previously published in CourseSource. Faculty from community colleges, primarily undergraduate institutions, and minority-serving institutions (colleges and universities) are encouraged to apply.

Participant Benefits
If you are selected for the Writing Studio, we will provide travel support including airfare reimbursement, two nights lodging in a dormitory at the University of Minnesota, and food during the short course (from dinner July 21st through lunch on July 23rd). Unfortunately, due to limited funding, we are not able to provide reimbursement for travel food or ground transportation. If you wish, you can stay for the SABER meeting and use other resources to cover your meeting registration, lodging, food, parking, etc. expenses, starting the afternoon of July 23rd.

The Writing Studio will provide time for you to work on your CourseSource manuscript and receive advice and feedback from editorial staff. We will also connect you with other prospective authors.

A note from SABER President, Jenny Knight, regarding COVID-19 and SABER
"We recognize that the current COVID-19 situation will influence your choices, both personally and professionally in the upcoming months. Be assured that the health and safety of our community are paramount, and SABER leaders will continue to monitor this evolving situation in order to make informed decisions as we get closer to the conference date. We are currently investigating online options for conference attendance. We are keeping abreast of our conference obligations and logistics and are staying in communication with conference partners. Since the conference is over 4 months away, the situation could change before registration and travel plans need to be made. We will continue to update the SABER membership each month. Please stay safe!"
