The Amherst College Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) seeks an experienced, thoughtful, and inspiring educational developer to join a growing team to build and sustain a vibrant and inclusive learning community at a small, highly selective private liberal arts institution. The assistant director/STEM specialist is a full-time, year-round position, with a job group and level of RI-4.

Reporting to the director of the CTL, the assistant director/STEM specialist collaborates with individuals and departments to promote effective teaching and learning strategies and to help foster inclusive classroom environments. This work is profoundly important because Amherst College has transformed its student body so that today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst's students are Pell Grant recipients, 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color and over ten percent are international students. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.

The individual in this role will collaborate with colleagues at local, regional, and national levels to promote excellence in education at Amherst College. The successful candidate will work on initiatives and programming focused on science and quantitative education and will play a key role within the CTL staff. The assistant director/STEM specialist contributes to program development, evaluation, communication, and administration of a growing educational development program.

Key Responsibilities

Pedagogical design consultations

Serve as a resource for faculty, instructors, and other campus colleagues for a variety of teaching and learning needs, especially those focused on natural scientific and quantitative disciplines. This work may include advising on the development of innovative assignments, activities, instructional and assessment approaches, as well as syllabi and curricular improvement.

Facilitate faculty and staff learning communities and workshops on pedagogical methods and effective practices in a variety of focus areas such as inclusive pedagogies, meaningful learning assessment, active and engaged learning, emerging and innovative pedagogical frameworks, etc.

Collaborative projects on course and curricular design

Develop and support programming that contributes to an inclusive learning environment
Collaborate with the CTL team and other campus partners to develop, sustain, support and assess educational development initiatives, especially those focused on natural scientific and quantitative disciplines

Operational support

Work with the CTL team on building key relationships across campus
Work with the CTL team to develop, manage, and maintain newsletters, websites, and social media that will help us share information about teaching at Amherst College

Qualifications

Required

Master's degree in a STEM discipline
Two years of college-level teaching, with at least one year in a STEM discipline
One year of providing pedagogical support for faculty and instructional staff
Knowledge of theories, practice, and research related to teaching and learning in quantitative disciplines at the college level
Ability to work independently and take initiative by showing leadership in key areas of responsibility
Superior verbal and written communication, time management, and organizational skills, with excellent attention to detail.
Superior collaboration skills, including the ability to work within a team to identify opportunities, present ideas, and provide constructive feedback
Knowledge of assessment methods, especially relevant to quantitative disciplines in a small liberal arts institution
Proven training skills, including the ability to manage conflict, support fellow team members, facilitate a motivated and positive approach to tasks and problems, take and share responsibility, and generate action items for self and others
A deep commitment to building an inclusive educational development program, which may be demonstrated through engagement with and application of innovative, inclusive pedagogies in the individual's own teaching, research or pedagogical development work

Preferred

Ph.D. in a STEM discipline
Two to five years of college-level teaching experience in STEM education
Experience working in a center for teaching and learning or other pedagogical support environment
Experience in qualitative and quantitative data analysis
