published Jan 28, 2016 12:03pmThe Department of Teaching and Learning at Washington State University invites applications for a permanent, full-time tenure-track science education faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level for the new WSU Health Science STEM Education Research (HS-STEM-ER) Center. The mission of the WSU HS-STEM-ER Center is to guide excellence in K-20 teaching, and learning at WSU, the state, and beyond by supporting health science STEM education research and related outreach programs and professional activity. The HS-STEM-ER Center is grounded in well-established relationships with regional K-12 schools and higher education institutions. We seek creative and collaborative scholars with established scholarly records to help define and carry out the Center's research agenda and related efforts, as well as contributing to a growing Mathematics and Science Education graduate and undergraduate program. Based on scholarly record, this faculty member will be considered for a Boeing Science Education Professorship.
Washington State University is a land-grant doctoral/research institution with faculty and programs on four campuses. WSU Spokane is an entrepreneurial urban campus focused on health science education. The WSU Spokane campus, which lies at the heart of a developing University District and at a premier location along the Spokane River, houses both WSU Spokane and Eastern Washington University programs. Located in the beautiful inland northwest region of the United States, Spokane offers a diverse landscape that is attractive to outdoor enthusiasts while maintaining the cultural amenities of a mid-sized US city.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct scholarly research on science education and/or STEM pipeline-related topics.
- Solicit external funding to support the research, outreach, and professional development goals of the HS-STEM-ER Center.
- Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in science education and STEM education and mentor graduate students in science and mathematics education.
- Participate in an interdisciplinary statewide WSU team committed to effective graduate and undergraduate teacher education through teaching, mentoring, and service.
- Contribute to the HS-STEM-ER Center's collaborative planning and efforts.
- Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with professionals in K-12 schools, regional universities, and community agencies.
Required Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in science education or a related field by the date of hire.
- Established record of scholarship including publications in widely recognized journals with a focus on important and timely issues in STEM and/or science education.
- Demonstrated record of obtaining or potential to obtain external funding.
- Strong collaboration skills.
- Demonstrated record of effective pedagogy.
- To qualify at the associate professor level, applicants must have a demonstrated and consistent record of publishing in nationally and internationally recognized journals over at least 5 years, obtaining and/or collaborating on externally-funded projects, and initiating and leading collaborative work with K-12 and higher education partners.
Desired Qualifications:
- Practical knowledge of K-12 teaching or learning.
- Demonstrated record of teaching and mentoring college students.
- Demonstrated record of initiating and leading collaborations including, but not limited to, any of the following groups: K-12 schools, community college systems, university peers, community agencies.
- Demonstrated record in interdisciplinary STEM collaboration.
- Familiarity with the STEM education research literature, particularly at the K-12 level, and ability to connect it to the pursuit of health science careers.
- Demonstrated understanding of connections between the Next Generation Science Standards and STEM including the integrated nature of STEM education
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations or incorporate issues of diversity into research, teaching, or service.
