Instrument Type

WHOLE ROCK ANALYSIS - XRF X-ray Fluorescence

Rigaku

Application:

Whole-rock analysis (major and trace element)

Typical Use:

Whole-rock major and trace-element analyses. For trace-element analyses of many elements this instrument is coupled with the ICP-MS. (See notes for other instrument.)

Conditions for Use:

Submitted samples will be analyzed on a contract basis (i.e. lab personnel will do the work).
Visitors are invited to work in the lab to work with lab personnel.
Visitors are invited to work in the lab to design and do the work yourself.

User Fees:

$20/sample for major elements.
Trace elements Rb, Zr, Sr used for internal standard for ICP-MS $7.50/sample.
Trace elements (11) if ICP-MS is not required $20/sample.
Grinding and glass disk preparation $6.50/sample.
Visitors can prepare samples in our lab with a material charge of $1.00/sample.

Instrument Priorities:

Funded research has a priority. Class demonstration and class projects are encouraged, if the schedule permits. Unfunded research can be negotiated.

Remote Use:

No

Sample Preparation:

Samples need to be ground to clay size. If Ta is desired, do not grind in a Tungsten carbide mill.

Standard Collections/Lab Blanks:

Standards are provided.

Software:

Data reduction is done with XRFWIN Software (Omini Incorp.) using fundamental parameters for major elements and regression analyses for trace elements.

Educational Use:

Class demonstrations are available for undergraduates.
Undergraduate student research projects are invited.
Graduate student research projects are invited.
Tutorials and other educational materials related to the lab are available.
