Summary

With increasing application sensitive electronic loads and digital controllers, there is a need for quality power to be delivered to the consumer of electricity. In case of poor power quality there can be economic consequences and cost business millions of rupees each year in revenue loss, process improvements ,opportunity loss and equipment failure. Maintaining power quality and reliability is also an important feature of smart grid. Understanding power quality phenomena has become an important part of electrical engineering education and undergraduate and post graduate syllabus. The challenges of understanding the scenarios in which a power quality event like voltage sag can take up various characterisations can be overcome with simulating these.


Learning Goals

The learning goals of the this teaching activity ( Understanding Fault based Voltage Sag and interruption in Matlab & Simulink) are to revise the concepts of power systems to apply it to demonstrate voltage sag for different scenarios. In addition to classroom teaching such an activity will help students explore and understand various possibilities of a power system design , specifications, events impacting a power quality problem of voltage sag. This activity will help develop critical thinking, computation& model development skills.

Context for Use

This teaching activity is meant for undergraduate students where the student can be engaged in classroom activity, lab activity & short project assignments. This activity will take from 3-4 classes for demonstration and assessment. Learning MATLAB and Simulink Basics &
Sim Power systems libraries are needed as a prerequisite.

Description and Teaching Materials

This teaching activity needs MATLAB script and Simulink Libraries. There are some good power system examples in Simulink which was also used as case studies. A basic model is developed and attached for your reference. 5 bus Hydro Quebec model example is available in SimPower systems> Specialized technology Library. The steps described can be followed to take the student learning levels from "Understanding & Remembering" to "Applying the concepts" learnt to a case study and analysing further.
