      The Sustainability Education Framework for Teachers (SEFT) intends to build acapacity for educators to be able to understand: (i) the broad, complex nature of sustainability, (ii) the problem-oriented, solution driven nature of sustainability, and (iii) how sustainability connects to them as both citizens and classroom teachers. SEFT embraces four ways of thinking: futures, values, systems, and strategic which are conceptualized as being bi-directional and interconnected.

      An introductory (100-level) environmental science lab was developed with an emphasis on reflection and application of sustainability concepts. Through a series of guided prompts, students were asked to use a multidisciplinary approach to examine the sustainability of the practices used in an applied agroecosystem scenario. Using their practiced skills in identifying and applying the three dimensions of sustainability, students were asked to reflect on one personal choice for each of eight aspects of daily consumption with the purpose of 1) devising a way to make each choice more sustainable, and 2) committing to one change utilizing SMART goal methodology.

      This article explores sustainability as an emerging paradigm for pre-service preparation of teachers. Sustainability education, which is rooted in Deweyan ideas about the fundamental social purposes of schooling, attends to the tensions created by the interconnectedness of environmental, economic, and social equity systems. Sustainability education extends but does not replace environmental education or education for sustainable development, although the latter is considered a problematic idea.
