Deep Sea Microbes Jigsaw
This activity will help students to explore characteristics of microbes that live in the deep sea. This activity can be conducted as a jigsaw or research project, and can be used with face-to-face, remote, and hybrid students.
This activity can be used in middle school or high school classes to study ocean sciences, earth science, or life science.
Skills and concepts that students must have mastered
Students should be able to read and interpret graphics.
How the activity is situated in the course
This may be used as an introduction, inquiry piece, or as a way to explore qualitative data.
Content/concepts goals for this activity
Students will describe characteristics of different deep sea and subseafloor microbes.
Higher order thinking skills goals for this activity
Students will make inferences about microbes using the graphics provided.
Other skills goals for this activity
Students will develop collaboration skills working in a jigsaw.
Students will make observations and inferences regarding characteristics of different microbes.
Description and Teaching Materials
This activity is housed in Google slides, and will be used in edit mode.
Teaching Notes and Tips
After opening the resource link, go to "file" and "make a copy," to secure a copy of the document that you can edit. Additionally, you can give students the link provided on slide 1, so that they can manipulate the slide.
