This policy narrative template provides a common mechanism for every LT1 participant institution to document current state and progress on Teaching Evaluation related policies – in a way that allows others to learn, and allows LT1 to identify common challenges and cross-cutting themes. The policy need not be limited to teaching evaluation per se, but should address teaching evaluation at some level.

It is important to note that policies can be explicit in the form of internally or externally accessible documents that function as guidelines. Policies can also be implicit in the form of informal practices or procedures, common understandings or traditions, or ways of operating that are not documented formally.

Overview: The overview should set the stage for the teaching evaluation policy work described in the narrative. Provide any background information that helps the reader understand what policy is being addressed and how the policy change work was approached.

Theme 1. Align policy change with what matters: Describe how the institution's efforts to create or change teaching evaluation policy were designed and carried out in ways that motivated stakeholders to change policy. For example, what matters to the institution and how was that leveraged to support policy changes? How was buy-in developed among various stakeholders? Consider commenting on whether the policy change work was motivated by an interest in advancing equity and inclusion, by gathering and presentation of evidence, and/or by the institution's identity.

Theme 2. Be strategic about policy content: Describe the content and/or changes in the content of the teaching evaluation policy. For example, does the policy include a definition of teaching excellence or more specific criteria for evaluating with respect to the definition? Does the policy require the use of particular sources of evidence, including multiple sources of evidence? Does the policy offer guidance on its execution, especially how to make teaching evaluation feasible? Does the policy explicitly address equity and inclusion?

Theme 3. Make policy change someone's job: Describe who was involved in the teaching evaluation policy work, including who was responsible for making policy changes and how individuals or groups who were tasked with changing policy had the time, energy, and incentive to do the work. Consider commenting on whether the policy change work was developed "bottom up" (faculty driven), "top down" (leadership driven), or a combination of the two. Also consider commenting on whether any change frameworks were used to make decisions about who is/was involved in policy change work and about strategies for conducting the work (see Table II in Corbo et al., 2016).

Theme 4. Approach policy change as a process: Describe the time needed to gather background information and exemplar material, draft new policy or policy changes, solicit feedback on drafts, and engender buy-in. Consider commenting on how the work was documented or communicated over time to ensure continuity, especially as leadership changes. Describe any efforts or plans to support policy implementation and review adherence to policy over time. Finally, describe any plans for revisiting the policy over time to keep it current.
