ACTION
- Earlier in the series, our evaluator Pam Eddy had you complete the Boleman & Deal Leadership Frames survey. Based on the results you got from that exercise, please use the discussion thread to respond to some reflection questions.
- Did your results from the survey surprise you? Knowing your current orientation, what do you see as a strength of your role on teams? How do you work best with others?
- Use the other discussion thread to comment on something useful that you learned from the reading you did for this unit.
- Respond to one or more posts from your colleagues.

During this session, we will use the Bolman and Deal Framework to:

- gain an understanding and appreciation for our colleagues' skills, perspectives, and motivations; and
- consider how different approaches might be persuasive to our colleagues and collaborators.
Agenda:
12:00 pm Welcome and Roadcheck Summary
12:05 pm Intro
12:10 pm Breakout groups - Keep notes in your workspace page and nominate someone to do the report out.
Scenario
Imagine: You have just finished a series of professional development experiences focused on making positive changes in the culture of your department and are all fired up about what you have learned. You've got some cool new strategies that you think could make a big difference and you plan to use them in your teaching. But now you need to convince your colleagues to try some new things as a whole department. Importantly, you want to document the changes that are occurring to determine how students' outcomes and experiences improve. Your initial excitement over these new ideas and how you might share them begins to wane as you know how hard it is to get colleague buy-in to new ideas. You have the constant nay-sayer colleague whose refrain is always "That's not how we do things here!", a host of adjunct faculty who don't feel supported in the work they already have to do, and a chair with their own pet projects that they think are more important. How might you frame what you want to do in ways that speak to the needs and concerns of your department colleagues?
- Go around and give everyone a chance to comment: From the point of view of your high frame (which one?), how would you approach the scenario?
- Making some assumptions about the frames of the colleagues mentioned in the scenario, what arguments might you try to gain their support?
