Workshop Goals
This workshop will bring together diverse members of the geoscience community to:
- reflect on the current state of inclusive practices in academic geoscience,
- articulate what is needed to engender climates of belonging in academic geoscience communities, and
- envision how the On the Cutting Edge program format can be adapted to serve the community's current needs.

Friday, December 13, 2024 - Saturday, December 14, 2024
Workshop Format
The workshop will bring together 30 participants in a hybrid format, with 15 in-person in Arlington, VA, and 15 taking part virtually through Zoom using a facility designed for fully interactive hybrid meetings. All participant contributions are valued, and the workshop will be structured such that all voices are heard regardless of the format of their participation.
Expectations
Participants are expected to:
- before the workshop - review background documentation about the current On the Cutting Edge program structure and DEI initiatives as well as providing asynchronous input on potential meeting topics
- during the workshop - participate in all sessions and adhere to the SERC Code of Conduct
Stipends
Participants will receive a stipend for their time based on their mode of attendance. The 15 virtual participants will receive a $200 stipend for their attendance. The in-person participants will receive a $975 stipend for their travel and attendance.
Invitation and Selection Criteria
This workshop is by invitation only. Invitees will be asked to complete a registration form to confirm their participation and provide additional information.
Participants will be invited from the following groups:
- Early Career Geoscience faculty and postdoctoral scholars (PhD ≤ five years) who have participated in programming focused on or published on the topic of diversity, inclusion, and belonging in higher education and/or geoscience. (Note: these participants will form a sub-group to think about how to provide more relevant programming.)
- Academic geoscience community members, at any career stage, who previously led or currently lead NSF funded diversity initiatives with a belonging component, drawing from the GEOPaths and GOLD-EN program award recipients.
- Groups working with MSI faculty such as the InTeGrate STEP Center HBCU working group and the Geoscience Alliance.
- Geoscience education researchers including representation from the NAGT Geoscience Education Research Division leadership, survey management team, and classroom observation project.
Facilities
The workshop will take place at the Virginia Tech Executive Briefing Center in Arlington, VA. The center is located at
