2024 Hybrid Workshop
Following the 2024 AGU Annual Meeting
December 13-14, 2024
Virginia Tech Executive Briefing Center (Arlington, VA) or Online Via Zoom
This interactive hybrid workshop will occur over one and half days following the AGU Annual Meeting with the goal of beginning to set priorities for work improving a sense of belonging in academic geoscience in future initiatives. There will be significant opportunities for ideation, discussion and synthesis among the participants. We will work to elicit ideas and recommendations in each of the four target areas.
- Aspects of geoscience departmental and classroom culture that could be improved to support Sense of Belonging.
- Strategies for creating inclusive spaces, including those that have been tried, any resulting change, and articulation of barriers to use by different elements of the community.
- Use of the On the Cutting Edge (OtCE) professional development infrastructure to support improvements in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in geoscience education and geoscience education research.
- Additions or modifications to OtCE infrastructure that would enhance the implementation of inclusive teaching and practices in geoscience education classrooms, departments, and institutions.
Invited participants will include early career academic geoscientists, later career professionals with experience leading change efforts involving sense of belonging, and geoscience education researchers.
