Assistant Director, Center for Comparative Higher Education & Workforce Systems (CHEWS)

Seeking an Assistant Director for the new Center for Research on Comparative Higher Education and Workforce Systems (CHEWS) at UW-Madison's WI Center for Education Research. The Center will focus on four primary activities: (1) Initiate and oversee an applied research program on higher education-labor market dynamics including a focus on college career advising, comparative analyses of national school-to-work pathways, and organizational change centered on instructional transformation, (2) Educational programming including non-credit and credit courses on teaching 21st century skills and related educational policy/leadership issues, (3) Policy analyses of state, national, and international workforce development policies, and (4) Community development and outreach including an active Members program, monthly speakers series, and Center publications.

The Assistant Director will leverage their technical expertise in workforce development, comparative higher education, or a related field to independently develop a new research program housed within the Center. Related responsibilities include developing grant applications to support this research, design and implement new studies, and prepare and present reports of research results to stakeholders.

The primary responsibilities for the Assistant Director include:

  • Collaborate with the Director to open the Center, refine the initial plan for the Center, launch new research initiatives pertaining to global higher education-workforce dynamics or related topics, and develop budgets, identify and pursue external funding opportunities and track expenditures.
  • Liaise with Center members, supporters and advisors,
  • Create and disseminate all Center publications.
  • Manage the day-to-day functions of the newly established Center Coordinate the monthly speaker series.
  • Coordinate the monthly speaker series.

Required qualifications: PhD. in Education, Labor Economics, Public Administration or related Social Science field. Working knowledge of current issues in labor market economics, public policy, education-workforce dynamics, and/or comparative higher education.
At least two years of experience administering academic programs and/or research projects related to the Center's topical areas.

Proven experience conducting independent research including development of research design, human subjects protocols, data collection and analysis, and preparing results for dissemination through scholarly and practitioner outlets.
Successful record in independently preparing grant proposals, securing funding, managing budgets, and implementing proposed activities.

Experience successfully managing staff including conducting annual reviews, delegating tasks, and supporting staff professional development.

Preferred qualifications include the following:
Experience with data visualization techniques and preparing accessible publications.

Experience managing social media activities for a research or policy-oriented organization.

Working knowledge of global higher education-workforce systems, especially in East Asian (China, South Korea, and Japan) and European countries.

Expertise in one or more of the following research methodologies: content analysis, ethnography, grounded theory, experimental design, inferential statistics, social network analysis, and policy analysis.
