Sponsor the Preparing for an Academic Career Program
Securing a position and being successful in academia is a daunting prospect for many graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. Many are familiar only with their own undergraduate and graduate institutions, and are unfamiliar with the options for academic careers beyond those of the professors they know. Academic job applications typically require components like teaching and research statements, which may require an unfamiliar writing style and approach.
The Preparing for an Academic Career in the Geosciences workshop has been designed to confront these concerns and discuss tips, strategies, and coping mechanisms for success in teaching and research in academia from a variety of geoscience professionals at a range of institutions. This annual workshop brings together 6-8 leaders with a wide variety of experiences with 20-50 participants who are nearing the end of their graduate program or are currently post-doctoral researchers. This workshop takes place in-person in even years at the Earth Educators' Rendezvous and online during odd years.
