Stratospheric Ozone and Ozone Holes


Analyzing the Antarctic Ozone Hole - In this guided activity, users quantify the area of the Antarctic ozone hole each October from 1996 to 2004. Then they bring their measurements into a spreadsheet program and create a graph to document changes in the size of the ozone hole. This activity is part of the Earth Exploration Toolbook, which provides teachers and/or students with direct practice for using scientific tools to analyze Earth science data. This activity is designed for a high school audience; there is also a college level version of this activity.

SERC Ozone Teaching Activities - This SERC-wide search lists activities that focus on ozone depletion. These activities range from labs with tools such as Analyzing the Antarctic Ozone Hole, which is part of the Earth Exploration Toolbook, to an activity comparing sunscreens. These resources are suitable for high school and undergraduate classrooms.

SENCER Ozone Resources - This browsable list from the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER) project lists approximately 25 resources involving ozone and societal issues such as human health and sustainability. These include (and can be narrowed down by) assessment types, learning strategies (e.g. case study, field experience, etc.), civic issues involved, or subject discipline.


Tropospheric Ozone - Ozone Pollution


Ozone Pollution - This lab exercise is designed to provide a basic understanding of a real-world scientific investigation. Students are introduced to the concept of tropospheric ozone as an air pollutant due to human activities. Students will learn how to use, analyze, and visualize data to investigate this air pollution problem, and communicate the analysis to others in a standard scientific format.

Exercise on Atmospheric Structure, Stratospheric Ozone, and Acid Rain - This introductory-level activity provides a basic introduction to both stratospheric ozone and tropospheric ozone.
