Site Guide: Oceanography

Several resources about oceanography are available from the SERC websites. Below is a list of project websites that provide visualizations, teaching activities, and tools that may be of use in the classroom or in lab.

General Collections of Information, Activities, Labs, and Resources

Teaching the Ocean System: Resources for Educators - This web collection will help undergraduate faculty and students use a new approach to teaching and learning oceanography. Here we consider the use of models, datasets and visualizations in teaching. This collection also includes a activity collection and examples of teaching materials and lesson plans.

The Earth Exploration Toolbook - The Earth Exploration Toolbook has a number of data-rich activities designed for high school classrooms including Detecting El Nino in Sea Surface Temperature Data and When is Dinner Served? Predicting the Spring Phytoplankton Bloom in the Gulf of Maine. The site browse will give you a complete list of ocean related activities.

Earth and Environmental Science Related Resources

The Hurricane - Climate Change Connection: - Large hurricanes have captured the attention of many citizens in recent years and prompts the inevitable question about the relationship between climate change and hurricanes. This website focuses on recent hurricanes and the latest climate change research to engage students and help them understand the central issues of climate change and hurricane activity.

Teaching Climate Change: This site will allow educators to locate and use the best resources for teaching about Earth's climate system and the changing climate over the past one million years. Here you will find climate data, visualizations, teaching activities and case studies.

All Things Cretaceous: The Cretaceous collection was created to allow students and teachers alike to explore the complex relationships between physical Earth, changing climate and sea level, biota (evolving and extinct), and implications for modern society that are related to this amazing period of Earth's history.

EarthLabs: Hurricanes - This site hosts a collection of 9 labs exploring the causes and impacts of hurricanes. The labs include data and visual-rich material to teach students about hurricanes.

Visualizations

Oceanography Visualization Collections - This page is a search of all the visualization collections at SERC that are related to oceanography. A search box on the right side of the results allows users to narrow their search by a subject sub-topic.

Ocean System Visualization Collection - This collection of 15 visualizations includes animations, photos, and models of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, other historical tsunamis, and hypothetical tsunami models. An extensive collection of other tsunami visualizations and information is also available.

On the Cutting Edge: Teaching Geoscience with Visualizations - This part of the On the Cutting Edge website provides access to many collections of visualizations on a variety of hazards-related topics including hurricanes, tornadoes, landslides, volcanoes, earthquakes, the impacts of climate change, tsunamis, and floods as well as many others.
