From the classroom to the workforce: Increasing student success in the geosciences

Kansas City, MO - A Local SAGE 2YC Workshop


Friday, March 14, 2014.
8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Continental breakfast and lunch included.

This all-day workshop for 2YC geoscience faculty in the Kansas and Missouri region will include interactive panel discussions with representatives from industry, environmental and hydrologic consulting, construction, the GIS/geospatial sector, research, secondary and post-secondary education, education and outreach, and other geoscience-related fields. There will also be a materials distribution session during which panelists can share their programs and print materials geared toward students at 2-year institutions.

This workshop has already taken place.

Workshop Goals

  • Identify strategies to improve undergraduate geoscience student success, transfer, and graduation.
  • Develop action plans to implement strategies for student success.
  • Increase faculty awareness of geoscience career options for students in the Midwest region.
  • Identify opportunities to increase student awareness of geoscience career options in the Midwest region.
  • Strengthen a regional network of geoscience educators.

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided to the workshop participants. Please identify any special dietary needs on the registration form.

The workshop will be held in the Education Center building. Parking is available in the parking garage on the east side of the campus (3200 Broadway). Limited parking is available in a small lot on the north side of campus along 31st Street. Expectations

What are the participants expected to do:

  • Participants will be expected to bring a laptop or tablet with word processing ability
  • During the workshop: participate in all sessions; complete and submit an action plan; complete workshop evaluations
  • After the workshop: implement action plan; share workshop information with colleagues

Application and Selection Criteria

Full-time and part-time geoscience faculty at 2-year institutions in the United States and Graduate Students in geosciences are encouraged to apply. Workshop will be limited to 25 participants. Please use the online form to register.
