2026 Educator Workshop:
Teaching Computation with MATLAB (and GenAI)

October 25-27, 2026
Carleton College, Northfield, MN

For Educators in Engineering, Math, Geoscience, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and more...

Now in its 12th year, the Teaching Computation with MATLAB workshop brings together educators to learn about trends in teaching, share experiences, and develop curriculum that improves student learning. Each educator focuses on their particular course goals and desired outcomes.

The 2026 workshop includes a focus on Generative AI (aka GenAI). MathWorks staff and educator peers will be on hand to help and share related teaching tools, including new tools such as MATLAB Copilot and Simulink Copilot, MATLAB Course Designer, as well as Live Notebooks and MATLAB Grader. Participants will work in discipline-focused groups and individually to turn the learnings into concrete classroom approaches, drawing on relevant MATLAB tools and colleagues' insights.

The workshop will take place in-person at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

The workshop program combines training sessions introducing teaching tools, brief talks by experienced educator peers, and group breakouts. Educators will spend dedicated work-time developing course curriculum. Conveners architect the 3-day workshop program and working group make-up to match applicant interests and teaching focuses.

Workshop Goals

At the workshop, educators will:

  • Explore methodologies for teaching computation effectively, in engineering- and science-focused courses
  • Create, share and publish usable teaching activities (aka course modules)
  • Learn MATLAB teaching tools:  MATLAB Live Scripts, MATLAB Online, MATLAB Copilot,  MATLAB Course Designer, and  MATLAB Onramp -- to improve student learning and course effectiveness and appeal
  • Become part of a community of educators teaching computation and publishing shareable, reusable curriculum

This workshop is a collaboration between MathWorks and the Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College.

Dates and Times: October 25-27, 2026

The workshop will start on Sunday, October 25th with optional 1-on-1 mentoring sessions from 2:00pm-4:00pm. The full workshop participant cohort will meet at 5:00pm to start the formal program. Participants should plan to arrive at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport by 12:00pm on Sunday to participate in the mentoring sessions, or by 3:00pm at the latest for the full-group 5:00pm start. The Sunday evening program will end at 8:00pm.

On Monday, October 26th, participants will gather for a full day of workshop programming. The day will be broken up with breaks and an extended lunch. The workshop program will end in the late afternoon and is followed by a group dinner.

The final day of the workshop, on Tuesday, October 27th, begins in the morning and concludes at 2:00pm. Participants should plan flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport that depart no earlier than 4:30pm on the 27th.

Participant Contributions

Acceptance to and registration for the workshop means you agree to:

  • Submit a written teaching activity involving teaching computation using MATLAB. The Editor Review Team reviews activities submitted by workshop participants and shares feedback prior to the workshop (see the MATLAB Teaching Activity collection for examples).
  • Participate fully in the workshop and attend all workshop sessions. Multiple participants will be invited to deliver presentations on their teaching experiences and/or serve as working group facilitators at the workshop.
  • Review and follow the Code of Professional Conduct for SERC Events.

Applying to the Workshop

Applicants for this workshop are required to teach at a college or university and have experience teaching (or plans to teach) with MATLAB. In addition to applying to the workshop, applicants may also apply for a stipend using the separate stipend application form.
