Summary

This is a series of 2 semester long courses called "Biodesign Inventor's Studio" followed by 1 semester experience at a professional setting such as healthcare facility, healthcare startup, or healthcare company, or a healthcare lab etc. This will have collection of teaching modules. Project examples using MBSE are being collected this semester i.e., Fall 2026 and Spring 2027. A few will be shared at the end of the semester i.e. around September / October 2027.

Learning Goals

Goals of the teaching modules are:

Students:

1) learn and practice tools and processes to ideate, followed by design, and then validate to check the design using computational tools such as Mathworks' MBSE modules etc.

2) learn and practice tools and processes to check Design for manufacturability (DFM), design for reliability (DFR), design for serviceability (DFS) etc. using Mathwork's as well as its partners modules.

3) learn and practice other computational tools as needed which may not have any linkage with Mathworks' at this time.

4) Learn and practice tools to take their design and validate it with patients / end users etc. and then make it available for society.

Context for Use

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai have launched Rensselaer-Icahn School of Medicine Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine (CEPM).

Biodesign Inventor's Studio courses are part of the curricula for graduate students. Goal is to train the students to innovate and design in this space, so that these devices, drugs, technology and technology services etc. are made available to society.

In Fall 2026 and Spring 2027, the first batch of students in this program will go through these courses, so the teaching modules are being practiced, and tweaked as the course is progressing.

Around September / October 2027 time frame we would be able to share these teaching modules along with lessons learned, in addition to the design for next batch's teaching modules for the cohort starting in Fall 2027.

This space is being created to get in touch with the community who are working in this space to get ideas and utilize the lessons learned by the community so that we can build on the modules already developed by educators in this space.

Description and Teaching Materials

At this time, we are still working on developing the teaching modules. We would be able to share it with the community around September / October 2027.

Teaching modules include lecture materials, plus homework, reports, presentations, poster presentations, writing journal papers, and writing provisional patents etc.

Currently, we are having students learn the following Mathworks' modules to get started.

1) Systems Composer Onramp

Teaching Notes and Tips

We are currently using a combination of tools and processes used in such as 1) Engineering design process, 2) human centered design process, 3) lean design for six sigma process, 4) Disney's Imagineering process 4) Tools from IDEO and 5) ideation, innovation, and design tools that are home grown tools etc. 5) Use of various computational tools as needed and required in addition to Mathworks' tools and modules.

Additional teaching notes and modules are being developed dynamically as we teach the course.

Assessment

Student assessment is based on class participation, homework, studio work (in class activity), reports, presentations, poster presentations, authoring journal papers, provisional patent applications, peer reviews etc.

References and Resources

Mathworks' MBSE modules will be the base / anchor for several teaching modules / activities.
