Summary
In this activity the students will investigate creatures living under a rock. They will create a bulletin board depicting the creatures and their habitat. Students will then write a journal entry describing what they saw and what they know about the creatures that live under the rock.

This activity is designed for students to become aware of habitat, its importance to animals, and how different animals live together.

This lesson is designed for grades 3 or 4. Approx. 26 students.

Description and Teaching Materials
1. Do KWHL on Habitats.
2. Read Under One Rock, Bugs, Slugs, and Other Ughs by Anthony D. Fredericks.
3. Discuss the different creatures that lived under or near the rock in the story.
4. Bulletin board activity: Create a habitat under a rock. (Basics of bulletin board is completed by the teacher) Students will make worms, crickets, ants, beetles, and other creatures mentioned in the story. Each group will put their creature where it will most likely be found.
5. Journal entry: Student will reflect on what they learned about one specific habitat and its population. Later in the unit they will write another entry after further study of some of the specific creatures mentioned in the story then comparing the two entries.
Optional Activity: Have students find a large rock around their house. Look under it and write what they see and draw a picture.
