The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park: Conflict and Consensus in Marine Conservation

When it was formed in 1975, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) was a unique example of a multiple use marine protected area (MPA). Today it is often used as a model for other countries looking to establish similar MPAs. This case study looks at the historical context of the GBR; the physical, biological, social, economic, and cultural settings; and the processes of implementing and managing the park (including conflict between federal and state power). A focus is given to the key issues affecting zoning implementation, such as the balancing of interests for indigenous interests, fisheries, and tourism. The case study also reflects on management lessons learned and looks ahead to future problems the GBRMP faces.
